Chapter 12

Chad looked at the crumpled note from Miss French. “Annie, why didn’t you give this to me last night?”

Tears formed in her eyes. “I couldn’t. You already looked sad.”

He stared at the clock. “Let’s go. Suzy, finish your breakfast. I’m walking you two to school.” He darted a warning look at Annie. After Suzy ran to her room to get her things, he took Annie by the shoulders. “What happened?”

“It wasn’t on purpose. Margaret said it would be all right.”

“Tell me.”

“We left school at lunch and went to her house. We climbed up to her room and played with her things. Then, when it was time, we ran back to school and hid until Miss French let school out. I waited and caught up with Suzy. Miss French had given Suzy the note. She gave it to me. I didn’t want to get in trouble.”

Chad shook his head. At this rate, Denise might not want any of them. She already had trouble with her own son. “Here comes, Suzy. Let’s get to school. Miss French wants to talk to me.”

Suzy ran to them. “You’re walking to school with us? I’m glad. Sometimes that mean old Edward throws things at us and chases us.”

“Well, he won’t today.” Chad glanced at Annie. “We’ll talk about this before dinner.”

She nodded. “Yes, sir.”

They had just turned down the walkway to the school when Chad saw Sam and Denise just ahead of them. He wondered if she’d received a note too. He hoped Sam wasn’t in trouble, but by the way the boy was walking, he figured he’d done something.

Miss French stood by the door and welcomed them in. “If you and the girls will go to the west side of the room, and Denise, you and Sam can sit on the east. I’m expecting Mr. and Mrs. Fitzberg as well as the sheriff.” She tapped her ruler on her desk. “While we’re waiting,” she stopped. “Suzy, you can go outside and swing. I’ll come and get you when you can come in.”

Suzy sent a sympathetic glance at Annie and ran outside.

Miss French tapped the ruler on her palm. “Annie, you can tell your uncle what you did and why I wanted to talk to him.”

“Sam, you can explain to your mother why we’re having this meeting.” She looked up. “Good, here come the rest. Make your way down. Mrs. Fitzberg, you can sit by Deputy Warren. Mr. Fitzberg, you can sit by Denise and Sam.” She paced in front of the classroom. After everyone was seated, she stood in front of her desk.

“I sent notes home to your children because I have noticed a disturbing trend in the classroom. Annie and Margaret skipped school from lunch on. Doug and Sam shoved Edward and then they were all fighting. This occurred after school was over, but they were on the playground. Edward received a bloody nose, but he started the altercation.”

Mr. Fitzberg stood. “Edward, you will apologize. And be thankful all you got was a bloody nose.
